BARBARA COULAM

I studied at Nottingham Trent University where I gained a First class Honours Degree in Decorative Arts, specialising in Glass, particularly casting. I also learned fusing, slumping and blowing techniques. After exhibiting cast work in England and Europe I returned to my lifelong interest in working with recycled materials and sustainability. This led to the production of a range of recycled domestic glass products which has proved very popular. I now sell these at local and national craft fairs.

I am fascinated by the process of designing with glass. As a watercolour painter I find similarities between the two transparent media, enhanced by additional exciting 3-d possibilities offered by glass. I love pattern, and use studies of decorative architectural features, particularly ecclesiastical ones to inspire my work. I am also interested in creating textile effects in glass, using lace, knitting weaving and knitting either trapped in the glass or recreated in glass structures.

I find that being a member of ‘Greenhouse’ - a Nottinghamshire support group for local creative businesses and the Dodekadesigners provides encouragement and inspiration through mixing with other creative people. I also teach glassmaking at beginner and intermediate level.
