Southwell Exhibition 20010

My latest work is to explore the stained glass windows of Southwell Minister using the medium of black and white photography.

Can we view stained glass windows without colour? Will this transform how we perceive such an historical subject matter usually characterised by an array of colour and instead define it by contrast, tone and light intensity. Would each image take on a different meaning or significance through being viewed in black and white?

In order to answer these questions, I have attempted to highlight the extraordinary detail in specific areas of each window as opposed to focusing on its entirety. Certain elements of each biblical story have been chosen and identified through selecting an area of interest within each window. Transforming these images to black and white can heighten the emotional context when viewing.
